Day 4 Queenstown – The Day After! Queenstown Elopement Packages

Unwind you did it! Enjoy a stunning day trip to Milford Sound!

Milford Sound is an area of extraordinary beauty. It offers a majestic fiord, dramatic and awe inspiring scenery and prolific flora and fauna. Each tour begins with a complimentary pick-up from your accommodation. The pilot will then give a briefing on the route and scenic highlights likely to be encountered. These include the famous Skippers Canyon, the Paradise region (made popular as film locations for Lord of the Rings/Hobbit Trilogies), and the Donne glacier among many other awe-inspiring features. The 35 minute flight concludes with an over flight of the fiord of Milford Sound, prior to landing.

The second half of the adventure begins in Milford Sound, where your pilot personally escorts you to the boat to enjoy your Milford Sound Nature Cruise. Numbers aboard are capped and on this intimate experience, Nature Guides offer a personal commentary. The “Spirit of Milford” catamaran explores nooks and crannies along the edge of the fiord, nudging into sheer rock faces to examine flora and fauna in detail.

Following your Milford Sound cruise, your return flight takes in many of the pristine alpine lakes and waterfalls that Fiordland National Park is recognised for, including the Sutherland Falls which span 580m (1900 ft).

In the evening, enjoy a night in Arrowtown if you wish. This quaint township has an array of restaurants that are a must to try! Make a dinner reservation at Aosta for a taste of Italy, or perhaps Fantan might be more up your alley if you are looking for a spin on Asian Pacifica cuisine followed by a drink in The Blue Door to finish off your night.

    hunting New Zealand

General Questions on New Zealand Hunting

New Zealand is one of the most affordable and rewarding places to hunt in the world. With extremely high success rates and breathtaking wilderness, hunting in New Zealand is guaranteed to be an incredible experience. The below information will help you figure out logistics as you plan your NZ hunting trip.

Is hunting legal in New Zealand?

Yes, hunting is legal in New Zealand. However, you either need a valid New Zealand firearms license or a guide with a license. Therefore, we recommend all visitors book a hunting tour. Your guide can also ensure you follow all rules, such as those around hunting after dark and spotlighting on conservation land.

Can you hunt in New Zealand without a guide?

If you hunt in New Zealand without a guide, you will be hunting on conservation land rather than on private reserves. To do this, you will require:

However, you will find game much sparser on conservation land, because these areas are heavily hunted, including by helicopter. We recommend hunting as part of a tour; these often take you to private reserves.

    Do you tip hunting guides?

In New Zealand, tipping is neither required nor expected. However, if you feel your hunting guide has done an exceptional job, tips are welcomed. The amount is up to your discretion, as there is no standard percentage here.

What animals can you hunt in New Zealand?

You can hunt the following introduced mammals:

    • Deer
    • Tahr
    • Chamois
    • Feral Pigs
    • Wallabies
    • Feral Goats
    • Feral Sheep
    • Rabbits and Hares

What birds can you shoot in New Zealand?

    You can hunt these gamebirds:

    • Paradise Shelduck
    • Mallard
    • Grey and Shoveler Duck
    • Black Swan
    • Pheasant
    • Quail
    • Canada Goose
    • Feral Goose

You cannot hunt most native species, as these are protected under the Wildlife Act. The penalty for killing protected wildlife is up to 2 years in prison or a fine of up to NZD$100,000.

Where can I hunt in NZ?

If you have a firearms license and a permit, you can hunt on any conservation land in New Zealand. Otherwise, most hunting tours take place on private land across both islands.

Top New Zealand hunting lodges include:

    • Minaret Station, Wanaka (South Island)
    • Poronui Lodge, Taupo (North Island)
    • Treetops Lodge & Estate, Rotorua (North Island)
    • Woodbury Safari Lodge, Canterbury (South Island)
    • Manuka Point Lodge, Canterbury (South Island)

The South Island offers an abundance of easily accessible wilderness rich with game, while the North Island’s temperate forests teem with uncommon species such as sambar deer, rusa deer, and sika deer.

How much does it cost to hunt in New Zealand?

Hunting tour packages range from NZD$750 to NZD$22,000. However, most fall between NZD$4,000 and NZD$13,000. Often these are multi-day hunting packages including lodge accommodation and meals.

In general, New Zealand is a surprisingly affordable hunting destination with a success rate near 100%. The high success rate is because New Zealand’s introduced big game has no natural predators, so numbers flourish in wild areas.

Our hunting tours also include sightseeing to make the most of your stay in New Zealand. Enquire now for a custom quote.

Can you bring back meat from New Zealand?

To bring back game meat from New Zealand to the US, you must:

    • Have your meat prepared and labeled by a licensed butcher
    • Declare your meat at customs upon arrival

Most hunting guides partner with licensed butchers to make the process easy and straightforward.

Where can I hunt red stag in New Zealand?

Red deer are the most widespread deer species in New Zealand, with established populations in forest and tussock country from the Kaimai Range on the North Island to Stewart Island at the southern end of the South Island.

    • The Coromandel Peninsula
    • Taranaki

When can you hunt red stag in NZ?

However, the most popular time to hunt red stag is during the roar, when stags are at their most vocal as they call for mates. The roar lasts for approximately 4 weeks, from late March through April. The stags are at their most vocal during the middle 2 weeks.

How much does it cost to shoot a red stag in New Zealand?

Instead, you simply book a hunting tour package that includes guided hunting, accommodation, and meals.

Are red stag native to New Zealand?

No. New Zealand has no native mammals except bats, so all large game species have been introduced. This includes red deer.

    Are deer pests in NZ?

What is a trophy red stag?

The antlers are the major trophy on a red stag. A highly sought-after mature red stag trophy has 12 points and a heavy, thick spread.

    Is red stag meat good?

Our luxury New Zealand snow packages take you to some of the best ski fields in the southern hemisphere.

Hit the slopes at New Zealand’s top ski resorts, including:

    • The Remarkables
    • Coronet Peak
    • Cardrona Alpine Resort
    • Treble Cone

In addition, carve your signature in fresh powder with a heli skiing adventure.

Stay at sumptuous luxury lodges or 5-star hotels, and spend your free days experiencing the best of the Queenstown Lakes region.

Read on for answers to frequently asked questions on skiing in New Zealand.

Frequently Asked Questions on New Zealand Snow Packages

Ski Treble Cone Wanaka New Zealand
Ski Treble Cone Wanaka New Zealand

What is skiing like in New Zealand?

In New Zealand, snow rarely falls as low as towns. Therefore, you must drive up steep roads into the mountains to access the ski fields. There are no trees at New Zealand ski fields, and they tend to be smaller than their counterparts in the US and Canada. However, the steep climb offers excellent views back down toward the ski towns; New Zealand ski resorts offer some of the best views in the world.

Can you ski all year round in New Zealand?

No–the New Zealand ski fields are only open during the southern hemisphere winter, typically from mid-June through mid-October. However, avid skiers can combine New Zealand skiing with northern hemisphere skiing for a year-round snow experience.

What is the ski season in New Zealand?

Most New Zealand ski fields open by late June and close around late September. However, some open as early as the first week of June and remain open as late as mid-October. Cardrona Alpine Resort typically has the longest season. Of course, the ski fields are dependent on snowfall and weather to open.

What is the best time to ski in New Zealand?

    • June–if you want good deals, quiet slopes, and the Queenstown Winterfest
    • August–for the most reliable snow
    • September–for warm weather in town and spring snow conditions

What months does it snow in NZ?

On the South Island, snow can fall at any time of year. Typically, snow appears for the first time around April and melts away by November. However, snow rarely sticks around until June or July. In addition, the Queenstown Lakes region receives the occasional snow in January, in the height of summer.

Heli Ski Queenstown Wanaka New Zealand snow packages
    Heli Ski Queenstown Wanaka

Where do you ski in New Zealand?

Apart from small club ski fields, most New Zealand skiing is in these four regions:

    • Queenstown
    • Wanaka
    • Mt Hutt
    • Mt Ruapehu (the only North Island ski fields)

These are major ski resort regions with excellent facilities and ski infrastructure.

Where is the best place to ski in New Zealand?

    • Best ski field for families and beginners: Cardrona Alpine Resort
    • Best ski field for advanced skiers and snowboarders: Treble Cone
    • Cheapest ski field: Mt Hutt
    • Most famous ski field: The Remarkables

Since Queenstown and Wanaka are located just an hour apart, each offering a ski pass valid at two ski resorts, we recommend spending your ski holiday in this region and sampling all four top New Zealand ski fields.

Where is the best snow in NZ?

Cardrona Alpine Resort offers the most reliable snow cover. With sheltered slopes and excellent snow-making capacities, Cardrona usually opens by the expected season start date.

Treble Cone is less reliable. However, this ski field receives more snow than any other New Zealand ski field, so Treble Cone is your best chance of a powder day.

Which ski resort is best for beginners?

Cardrona Alpine Resort, near Wanaka, New Zealand, is perfect for beginners. You will find wide open beginner slopes, plenty of easy and intermediate terrain, and flexible lesson plans to match any schedule. Both adults and children of all ages will find it easy to master skiing at Cardrona Alpine Resort.

    new zealand snow packages

Where should I stay when skiing in Queenstown?

The two closest Queenstown ski fields are located in opposite directions, each within a 45-minute drive of the town centre. We recommend staying downtown or on the outskirts of town, where you will have easy access to both ski fields.

Can you stay on the mountain in Queenstown?

Cardrona Alpine Resort offers the only on-mountain accommodation in New Zealand. However, these apartments book up months in advance, so your chances of securing one are low. In addition, there is nothing other than the ski field facilities up at Cardron Alpine Resort. Therefore, most travelers choose to stay in either Wanaka or Queenstown.

What is there to do in Queenstown if you don’t ski?

Queenstown offers a fantastic range of activities for non-skiers. Some top options include:

    • The Skyline Gondola and Luge
    • The TSS Earnslaw Cruise and Walter Peak High Country Farm Tour
    • Wine Tours
    • Helicopter Flights
    • Lord of the Rings Tours
    • Adrenaline Activities–Jet-Boating, Skydiving, Bungy Jumping, Canyon Swings
    • Kiwi Birdlife Park
    • Onsen Hot Pools

Which is better, Queenstown or Wanaka?

Queenstown is a bustling ski hub with a resort town vibe. Meanwhile, Wanaka is quieter and more suited for families. Both towns are set beside lakes, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. The best town depends on your preferences.

Many New Zealand snow packages include a stay in both towns so you can sample the best of the Southern Lakes ski region.

Yes, you can marry in New Zealand on a visitor visa. As a tourist, you don’t need any special type of visa for a New Zealand wedding.

What do typical New Zealand elopement packages include?

You can choose how simple or elaborate an elopement ceremony you prefer. The very simplest form involves saying your vows before a celebrant with no guests in attendance. This takes very little planning and coordination and leaves more time for your honeymoon.

The Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata

Where is Middle Earth in real life?

For the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, New Zealand played the part of Middle Earth. In addition, most landscapes are real rather than CGI, so you can see the same mountains, rivers, and hobbit-holes that starred in the films.

Where is Middle Earth in New Zealand?

Film crews used landscapes all around New Zealand to create Middle Earth. Major filming destinations include:

    • Matamata (Hobbiton)
    • Glenorchy (Isengard, Lothlorien, Misty Mountains)
    • Queenstown (River Anduin, Ford of Bruinen, Refugees of Rohan)
    • Tongariro National Park (Mordor, Mt Doom)
    • Wellington (the outer Shire, the gardens of Isengard, Rivendell)
    • Mt Sunday (Edoras)
    tongariro national park
    Tongariro National Park

Where in New Zealand was the Lord of the Rings filmed?

Filming took place across the country. Wellington and Queenstown served as bases for numerous scenes, though other areas featured heavily as well.

In general, the South Island played the part of mountainous regions such as Rohan and Gondor, while the North Island doubled as the idyllic, rolling countryside of the Shire and the lava-strewn landscape of Mordor.

Is there a Lord of the Rings tour in New Zealand?

Many companies offer Lord of the Rings tours in different parts of New Zealand. The major Lord of the Rings tours include:

    • Hobbiton Movie Set Tour
    • Wellington Lord of the Rings Tour
    • Queenstown Lord of the Rings Tour
    • Glenorchy Lord of the Rings Tour
    • Edoras Tour
    • Lord of the Rings Helicopter Tours (Queenstown, Te Anau, Nelson)

Our 14 Day Lord of the Rings Luxury Holiday Package includes several notable Lord of the Rings location tours.

Can you visit where Lord of the Rings was filmed?

Yes, you can visit countless Lord of the Rings filming destinations all across New Zealand. However, some destinations are only accessed by helicopter or by hiking, so you will need to pick and choose. The major filming destinations are included on tours around areas such as Matamata, Wellington, and Queenstown.

Can I visit Hobbiton without a tour?

No. The Hobbiton Movie Set is located on private farmland, so you will need to book a tour to visit. However, you do have the option to book a private tour if you prefer.

Can you stay overnight at Hobbiton?

Can you rent a hobbit hole in New Zealand?

Yes, you can rent a hobbit hole. The two hobbit hole motels in New Zealand are:

    • Underhill
    • Woodlyn Park

Underhill is a romantic luxury glamping setup, set in a secluded, idyllic glen. This charming hobbit hole sleeps two.

The Hobbiton Evening Banquet Tour includes a daylight tour of the movie set, followed by a Hobbit-themed feast in the Green Dragon Inn. After that, enjoy a lantern-lit evening tour of Hobbiton. Day 1 Auckland – Taupo, The Lodge at Kinloch

Flight transfer Auckland to Taupo – 1 hour

Arrive in Auckland the gateway to New Zealand, then catch a domestic flight to your first golf destination, Taupo. The Lodge at Kinloch, located in Taupo, is set within the tranquil 254ha grounds of the Kinloch Club Golf Course. This modern uber-luxury lodge has been designed to emulate a version of the Kinloch region namesake Scottish Castle, but with a truly modern 21st century design concept. The main lodge, with local schist stone exteriors features dramatic framed vistas of the sensational views of the golf course and the ever changing Lake Taupo.

Stay 2 nights at The Lodge at Kinloch, Taupo.

    Accommodation: The Lodge at Kinloch

Day 2 Golf, The Kinloch Club

A Top 100 golf course, the Kinloch Club is a Championship inland links style Jack Nicklaus signature design. Measuring 6519 yards off the white tees, and 7363 yards off the Championship tees, Kinloch offers an exceptional golfing experience.

The design philosophy behind Kinloch was to enhance the natural environment – and allow the surroundings of the stunning Taupo region to shape each hole. But beware, it’s tough. The only flat lie you will have is on the tee box, so be prepared. Extensive bunkering guards the front of the greens and you’ll have to think carefully of every single hole shot.

There’s only one thing better than the satisfying feeling of holing out on the 18th at Kinloch, and that’s relaxing with friends in the superb luxurious Kinloch Clubhouse. The Kinloch Clubhouse features outstanding panoramic vistas all year round with comfortable indoor and outdoor seating to savour the views. With full gourmet catering and bar facilities available before, during and after your round of golf you’re sure to stay energised and refreshed.
